Eco school

CKIS are proud to be an Eco School!

We achieved our first Green Flag in March 2008 and achieved our Eco schools Merit award at the end of last academic year. We are very proud of our environmentally friendly and sustainable kindergarten and school. However, we are always striving to find ways to make our community even more environmentally friendly.

We participate in the Eco Schools programme which provides ideal means for fostering environmental awareness in the entire kindergarten and school in a way that links to many curriculum subjects. The primary aim of the Eco-Schools programme is to educate and empower young people to make positive decisions and become change makers for an environmentally sustainable world.

This is our school Eco committee team this year:

We enjoy working on the ten Eco Schools topics; Biodiversity, Climate Change, Energy, Global Perspectives, Healthy Living, Litter, Waste, Water, Transport and Outdoor Learning. Each year we choose 5 focus topics, identified by undertaking an Environmental Review and create an Action Plan to show how we will develop our selected areas within school.

Our focus topics in our Action Plan this year will be:-

  • Litter & Waste
  • Biodiversity
  • Transport

We have written an Action plan for 24-25 and this outlines our key priorities and actions (please see below)

We have two children from each class (including Kindergarten) who are part of our Eco Committee and meet weekly to organise many activities, including:

  • Switch Off Fortnight
  • Developing a Travel plan with other local schools in our area
  • Developing plans to increase Biodiversity across our environment through close work with our Forest School lead, Mrs Holburn
  • Creating 'Eco monsters' to collect and recycle resources across the kindergarten and school
  • Y2 weekly Litter Picking
  • Encouraging recycling by all within our kindergarten/school family and at home

Our Y2 Eco team will continue to take part in the weekly 'Eco responsibilities' of the golden boot count, light patrol and recycling.

'Switch Off Fortnight'

Every year we take part in 'Switch Off Fortnight'

Our school Eco council monitor the use of electricity in the school during the fortnight. We are in the process of having our roof mended so that we can explore having solar panels placed on our roof area this year and look forward to being able to monitor our electricity regularly once they are installed!
